Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic and public speechwriter. Feminist Frequency provides videos, comments and an analysis of portrayals in popular cultures. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist, media critic and a prestigious feminist for more than 10 years. Feminist Frequency examines the way women are represented in the pop culture. She's committed to removing stereotypes of women as they are depicted in pop media. Additionally she has a mission to increase awareness of online harassment directed at women and those who are marginalized. Sarkeesian holds a bachelor's degree in social thought and politics from York University. She is also an internationally acclaimed public speaker. Sarkeesian has given speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO Festival and United Nations Broadband Working Group. Interested in issues concerning gender and feminism since the age of 7, she started her own website Feminist Frequency in 2009 while still a student at the university. This ambitious woman planned to create an online series that examined gender representation in games, but was the target of an online harassment campaign. Her determination was not slowed by the harassment, the fact is that it only bolstered her drive to become an expert on media and feminism. Many awards have been presented to her in recognition of her contributions to the field she have made. Anita Sarkeesian, a media journalist who has received numerous awards and created Feminist Frequency which is an educational non-profit that examines the ways women are depicted within media narratives.
